Coffee helps you shit

Coffee has two virtues: it is wet and warm. (by sharaff)

I just found out that coffee actually helps us shit!!

I tried googling more information about it but couldn't find any concrete scientific reasons behind it.. But there's lots of questions from all over the world asking why coffee makes you shit.

After surfing more on the web.. I realized that coffee ain't so bad after all.. It may even help prolong life!! =/

Harvard School of Public Health researchers looked at coffee drinking and the risk of dying from heart disease, cancer or any other cause. They found that people who drank more coffee were less likely to die during 18 years of follow-up in men, and 24 years of follow-up in women.

from Coffee not a killer - and may protect women: study
and another article states that

Coffee drinking may lower your risk of colon cancer by up to 25 percent because of its ability to help keep you regular.

Two observational studies found that regular coffee intake reduced the risk of developing kidney stones.

People with asthma who drink coffee can have up to 25 percent fewer symptoms because one of the compounds in coffee - theophylline - acts as a bronchodilator.

Other diseases that coffee may help prevent: cirrhosis of the liver, Parkinson’s disease, skin cancer, and gallstones.

from Coffee is no longer a health villain
But whatever it is, it all say that we shouldn't drink coffee excessively but 2-4 cups a day won't be detrimental to our health.

+1 for coffee!

In the mood of Christmas

~Tis' the season to be jolly~
It's christmas time again...!! and I'm STILL in the midst of my examinations....
I'm running out of fuel and my endurance to study is diminishing every other day.

People Lurks (Plurk!)

I've been constantly plurking for the past few days...
I think it's pretty fun to play with.. Combines a bit of blogging + social networking together..

Basically, you just update your status (publicly or privately) and your friends can see or keep track of what you're doing!
It's nice if a group of friends use it but unfortunately, not many people I know uses plurk.
So, if you're interested to 'play' something new or just have nothing better to do, join Plurk!

No harm registering, and if you don't like it.. Just abandon it and let it rot till death... haha

Distractions

It's the midst of examinations and it's this time of 'season', that I'll stay more with the computer and get distracted while I study...

Over the past years, I've been distracted mainly by organizing my song collection, picture collection, play with widgets, desktop icons, online calendars, etc.

So, what did I do this time round?

  • Explored and used a software called Minilyrics where it displays and searches lyrics of songs automatically! Works across multiple multimedia-platforms. Very powerful piece of software.
  • Completed Red Alert 3 for all three factions
  • Explored microblogging websites such as Twitter and Plurk (using them both now, but I think plurk is slightly better of a service)
  • Semi-migrated to Google (where I started using Google Reader, iGoogle and Google Calendar) in case Yahoo! dies off..
  • Facebooked with my form 5 classmates after one of them posted pictures back in form 5 days...

Basically about it.. for the past er.. 3-4 weeks.
Damn, I had exams!!

Things to ponder

I've learned that you cannot make someone love you.
All you can do is be someone who can be loved.
The rest is up to them.
I've learned that no matter how much I care,
some people just don't care back.
And it's not the end of the world.
I've learned that it takes years to build up trust,
and only seconds to destroy it.
I've learned that it's not what you have in your life,
but who you have in your life that counts.
I've learned that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes.
After that, you'd better know something.

I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself
to the best others can do,
but to the best you can do.
I've learned that it's not what happens to people,
It's what they do about it.
I've learned that no matter how thin you slice it,
there are always two sides.
I've learned that you should always leave loved ones with loving words.
It may be the last time you see them.
I've learned that you can keep going
long after you think you can't.

I've learned that heroes are the people who do what has to be done
When it needs to be done
regardless of the consequences.
I've learned that there are people who love you dearly,
but just don't know how to show it.
I've learned that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry,
but that doesn't five me the right to be cruel.
I've learned that true friendship continues to grow even over the longest distance.
Same goes for true love.
I've learned that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to
doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

I've learned that no matter how good a friend is,
they're going to hurt you every once in a while
and you must forgive them for that.
I've learned that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.
I've learned that no matter how bad your heart is broken,
the world doesn't stop for your grief.
I've learned that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are,
but we are responsible for who we become.
I've learned that just because two people argue, it doesn't mean that they don't love each other.
And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

I've learned that sometimes you have to put the individual
ahead of their actions.
I've learned that two people can look at the exact same thing
and see something totally different.
I've learned that no matter the consequences,
those who are honest with themselves get farther in life.
I've learned taht your life can be changed in a matter of hours
by people who don't even know you.
I've learned that even when you think you have no more to give,
when a friend cries out to you,
you will find the strength to help.

I've learned that writing,
as well as talking,
can ease emotional pains.
I've learned that the people you care most about in life
are taken from you too soon.
I've learned that it's hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice
and not hurting people's feelings and standing up for what you believe.
I've learned to love
and be loved.
I've learned...

The start of examinations

I just finished my first paper! No more HRM!!!!
The countless hours of reading that OB Book and read ups about the US Presidential Elections and read ups on Blue Ocean Strategy.. It's all over!!!
Although I didn't write very well for that paper, but as long as I pass (or get a B) it's enough for me...

1 down, 5 to go!
Next paper is on Tuesday on Database Systems and the following day is Image Processing which I already SU-ed. Will only study after my database paper.

Then, it's only Software Engineering (worried about that) and finally, Web Application Design and Computer Security.

Have my timetable planned out nicely which day to study what... Only approximately 2 weeks remaining

Poetic Family

Christmas is around the corner and it's time to buy presents for friends and loved ones! It's been a tradition for my family to sit around by the Christmas tree for a gift-exchange session on Christmas day. However, it's been a 'headache' for most cause we have to crack our head with what to buy for each other for Christmas! So, my 2nd sister took the initiative to request for a 'wishlist' from all of us to make life simpler!

So, this 'poetic' thing started from my dad.. When some of us just list what we want, my father posted this in his email

This is what I want for Christmas:-

They are neither too cheap nor expensive,
With them I can climb roof and jog the track,
They provide fun and keep me occupied,
Anything to keep my feet and hands busy are most welcome
But not too much for my brain.

Actual I don't really know what I want
But anything from the heart will be most appreciated,
I still prefer the element of surprise.

And Grace happily 'deciphered' the email with

They are neither too cheap nor expensive, => Good introduction to a riddle
With them I can climb roof and jog the track, => Read between the lines - LADDER and JOGGING SHOES
They provide fun and keep me occupied, => Here, he starts to become clueless of what he wants
Anything to keep my feet and hands busy are most welcome => Resembles tools, DIY, anything interesting to do/fix/put together
But not too much for my brain. => NO BOOKS, PEOPLE!
=> Good use of paragraphing
Actual I don't really know what I want => Being honest, only knows he wants ladder and jogging shoes
But anything from the heart will be most appreciated, => Sweeet
I still prefer the element of surprise.=> Nice ending to riddle...that it remains a riddle!

And this is where it all started......
I continued on with

My Christmas wishlist prepares me for what everyone is but me;
Something comfortable to fit in AND easy to walk in.
Something that teases the brain or meets the eye;
As long as it is handy, it is fine.

But frankly speaking, it doesn't really matter,
Christmas is just once a year.
Memories are already worth to remember,
Just as long as we're together.

To which Alice, my 2nd sister replied with

Ai yo yo, our SAI family
why now all gila with po-e-try
Just tell us what you guys really mean
So that we won't buy gifts that end up in the bin!

Your poems and riddles are all so long
Your gift will be a laugh if we interpret it wrong
If read carefully the wish is actually just one or two
Who to buy them?----cheng, grace, james or choo!

Ha ha. We have a crazy family.
By the way, Pa, can I borrow your Xmas tree?
Confirm we are all chi sin
Sure will freak out poor Yin Sin
Ya, I can get a free Christmas tree
If you'll be so kind to chop one down for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And my brother, James replied with

Why borrow the Christmas Tree?,
When you usually get things for free,
Who says we are crazy,
Actually we are funny,

Just buy things from the list,
So that you will not miss,
Make sure it's a christmas present,
That will make us pleasant.

Hahahahaha......stress,
Until this email is a mess.
Yeah poor Yin Sin,
Sorry if we are chee sin,
You need not to worry,
You'll get use to us slowly.

Chopping of christmas tree is bad,
That will make mother nature sad,
Go get your own tree,
As it may only cost a minimum fee.

All this email is Papa's fault,
Soon this will be a crazy blog,
All this seems fun,
But time is short and I have to run,

Until next time,
I'll update the list of mine.

Where I replied with

All this replies make me laugh,
It'll just make email writing a lil' tough.
I can't wait to be home for Christmas,
Exam stress will make my head burst...

I still have assignments to hand in today,
And my first paper will start next Thursday.
I heard Grace is following yiche to Bali,
At that time, my semester ends - like finally!! =D

And my dad again...

Why borrow a tree that is old
Buy one that can be used over and over
Ask Santa n he will provide one
If you insist, I will provide one.

It is nice to have a change
Just like USA vote for change
Poetry is soul for the body
Keep it up for a funny family.

If list is given straight
Who can guarantee that it will not duplicate
Poetry is from the heart
Guess n buy right will be a delight.

And now everyone is replying in poetry style... lol...
Crazy family of mine... hahaha

Do you know?

that Mild Fevers are actually "good for your health"?

Fever is part of our bodies' defense mechanism. When we are fighting an infection, our body temperature rises

As our white blood cells increase in number, like an army to fight the germs, they go faster and faster attacking the germs, this causes our bodies to heat up, thus causing the fever or rise in body temperature.

A temperature of 100 to 101 degrees Farenheit is good for the body because it shows that the body is fighting the infection. However, if a fever goes too high, measures must be taken to bring the fever down a bit
quoted from essortment
I finally fell sick and resorted to get medication from NTU's medical centre (which they charged me SGD$20.35 for a cough syrup, lozenges and flu pills).

I wasn't having fever at that time but by the time I came back to hall and took a nap, my fever start kicking in. My gf was with me at that time and instinctively, I told her that I want to brew the trusted "herbal tea" to lower down my body temperature to which my gf objected on. Told me that fever is good... I was like "what?!" and she slowly explained to me how the immune system works while we're having fever... haha.. I wasn't really convinced until she showed me some articles from websites (here)

I'm too hot!

Well, not exactly hot.. I'm just heaty...
Think I've consumed too much chocolates (a few varieties), snacks and coffee (I even mixed chocolates into the coffee) in one day and now, my throat is killing me!! I've been brewing my trusted "Ah Poh Cha" which helps reduces heatiness, fever, etc.!

It's my cure it all when I'm sick... cough, fever, sore throat. (except flu of course, there's still no known cure for it)

If this fails, my next best friend is Fisherman's Friend! The extra strong version.
Fisherman's Friend (by hwayoungjung)

And by any chance the bacteria is insanely strong, well.. I'll have to resort to antibiotics then. =/ Fastest and most efficient way to kill germs; but not so good for your immune system (in general) AND your wallet.

End of a long week, Beginning of another

It's the end of my final week for my semester! After 'fighting' through CAs, HRM presentations, FYP stuffs, design projects.. It's all over!!! I officially do not have any more classes next week... But it's just a start of another long week...

My following week is filled with 4 deadlines. My FYP Interim Report (can be considered done), my Image Processing CA (still don't know how to do), Design Project (almost done after spending the whole of Saturday doing it), Database Project (in progress)

After all those, it's the start of my examinations week. The first paper being HRM (13 Nov) - 25 MCQ and 2 Case Studies. The case studies will be on Blue Ocean Strategy and high possibility pertaining the leadership qualities of the US presidential election between Obama and McCain.

I can't wait for this semester to be over.... But after that, I'll have to resume my FYP work. When will all this end??
